It’s a small, small world at the Powerhouse Discovery Centre these Autumn school holidays! Join us for a fun and interactive holiday show presented by talented puppeteer, Kay Yasugi, and her puppet friends from Pupperoos. Discover Little Life Under a Microscope, create a Mini World terrarium with the talented Stefanie Ingram, design a Small World Mosaic with our friends from Hughes Studio or learn the Art of Puppetry by booking into our exciting mini workshops! Young discoverers will also enjoy our inspiring make-and-do activities, including Finger Puppet Family and Mini Memo Message Board. Our incredible full day workshops, Lego®Build, Lego® Robotics and Jewellery Design and Make with Carl Noonan are all back by popular demand!

Puppet Pandemonium

Talented puppeteer, Kay Yasugi, from Pupperoos brings along her puppet friends for an exciting show and tell! Each of Kay’s puppets has a story to tell on their first visit to the Discovery Centre and they need your help to tell it! An interactive and engaging show from start to finish, selected audience members will get the chance to help operate the puppets and play a musical instrument or two. Kay brings her wealth of knowledge about puppetry and her experience from working on ’The 13-Storey Treehouse’ at the Sydney Opera House to the Discovery Centre in this unique show for all to enjoy. Suitable for all ages. Free with general admission. Individual bookings not required. Bookings essential for groups of 10 or more.

Finger Puppet Family

One puppet, two puppets, three puppets, four! Make a little finger puppet family out of simple craft materials! Inspired by our small puppet collection and holiday show, this make-and-do activity invites young participants to make their own finger puppet family to take home…and maybe be inspired to put on a show for family and friends! Suitable for 3+ yrs. Participation in all holiday make-and-do activities $2 per child. Adult assistance and supervision essential. Individual bookings not required. Mini Memo Message Board

Inspired by all things small, young participants are invited to make either a lady bug or bee design mini message board to take home to put on their fridge or wall! With an erasable chalkboard surface, this fun activity will allow participants to make something tiny and practical. Suitable for 3+ yrs. Participation in all holiday make-and-do activities $2 per child. Adult assistance and supervision essential. Individual bookings not required. Bookings essential for groups of 10 or more.

The Art of Puppetry   BOOK NOW

Tuesday 15th April

Learn the art of puppetry in this creative, fun and engaging workshop with puppeteers from Camp Quality! Gaining inspiration from traditional Japanese Bunraku puppets, these puppeteers will teach participants how to make their very own version of a Bunraku puppet out of various craft materials to take home. During the workshop, participants will gain skills in puppet construction and learn techniques in puppet characterisation as they work together to operate their puppets. Suitable for 7+ years. Children aged 5–6 years may attend but must be accompanied and assisted by an adult guardian for the 90-minute duration of the workshop. $20 / $18 Powerhouse Members. Mini World Terrarium   BOOK NOW

Make your own miniature garden with talented and inspiring interior designer and stylist, Stefanie Ingram. Each participant will learn about open air terrariums and create a mini world of their own to take home by going through the process of making a terrarium from start to finish. To add a personal touch, each participant is asked to bring some little figurines or tiny objects that they can add to their terrarium. All other materials and vessels are supplied. Suitable for 8+ years, including adults. Children aged 6–7 years may attend but must be accompanied and assisted by an adult guardian for the 90-minute duration of the workshop. Adult guardians may also make a terrarium of their own, provided an additional space is purchased at the time of booking online. $50 / $45 Powerhouse Members. Little Life Under the Microscope   BOOK NOW

Find out about the tiny critters that are all around us! In this workshop, explore all things small and smaller, including leaves, feathers, bugs and other crawly critters under a microscope. Participants will also get the chance to make their very own bug catcher to take home! Suitable for 7–12 years. Adult guardians are encouraged to accompany children aged 5-6 years for the 90-minute duration of the workshop. $20 / $18 Powerhouse Members. Bookings and prepayment essential as numbers are limited to 30 per workshop.

Small World Mosaics   BOOK NOW
10.00am—12.30pm and 1.00pm—3.30pm
Thursday 24th April

Be inspired by the built environment and create a bright and colourful mosaic interpretation of the world around you! Join our friends from Hughes Studio and Mosaico as they teach participants how to make a small world mosaic to take home in this hands-on workshop. During the half-day workshop, participants will work with small mosaic tiles to create an A4-sized landscape, cityscape or streetscape and will learn how to cut and lay tiles and how to combine colours and pattern for dynamic effects. All materials are supplied. Suitable for 7+ years. Children aged 6 years may attend but must be accompanied and assisted by an adult guardian for the 120-minute duration of the workshop. $50/$45 Powerhouse members. Lego® Build: Construction Workshop

Become a Lego® master builder! Presented in partnership with the Technology Education Company, this full-day, hands-on, fun workshop will stimulate creativity while developing teamwork and problem solving skills. Introducing concepts of 3-D visualization, participants will work in small teams to build houses, castles and towers of strength using Lego®. Please note that this workshop does not include Lego® to take home at the end of the workshop. Suitable for 6–8 year olds. $65/$60 Powerhouse members. Please bring your own lunch. Lego® Robotics Workshop

Presented in partnership with the Technology Education Company, this full-day, hands-on workshop teaches participants the basic skills of robotics using Lego® RCX bricks and software (Lego® 1999). During the workshop and working in teams of three, participants will build robots with Lego® and then program them to move, dance and conquer obstacle courses using touch and light sensors. Later in the day, teams participate in a challenge to determine the best-designed robot on the day. Please note that this workshop does not include a robot to take home at the end of the workshop. Jewellery Design and Make Workshop

Become a jewellery designer and maker for a day with jewellery designer and art teacher, Carl Noonan! During this workshop, participants will create two beautiful pieces to take home—a copper pendant and a silver ring. Drawing inspiration from the intricate and small designs seen on jewellery pieces and various beautiful objects in our collection, participants will develop a design that reflects this. Learning jewellery techniques and utilising special jeweller’s tools, they will create a professional and unique pendant that they will cherish. Using the skills that they learn from making their pendant, participants will also learn how to make their own silver ring, including measuring lengths of metal for the diameter of their rings, using jeweller’s pliers and a mandrel to shape their ring and professionally polishing their finished product. Carl Noonan is back by popular demand, bringing brings his teaching experience and expertise to the Powerhouse Discovery Centre for an educational and hands-on experience. Suitable for 10+ years. Children aged 8–9 years may attend but must be accompanied and assisted by an adult guardian for the 6-hour duration of the workshop. $80/$75 Powerhouse members. Please bring your own lunch. Colour Me! Competition

In partnership with Camp Quality, the Powerhouse Discovery Centre offers an exciting colouring competition these school holidays. Located in the foyer, the Camp Quality puppet, Giggle, has joined our wonderful collection. Inspired by his bright personality and significance in the world we live in, we invite young visitors to colour in Giggle with bright colours! Camp Quality and their puppets will also be on site on selected dates for a Meet and Greet, so don’t miss your chance to see them! Prizes will be awarded in three categories: Category 1 (4 years and under), Category 2 (5-7 years) and Category 3 (8-12 years). Competition closes at 4.00pm, Thursday 24th April, 2014. Discovery Trails

Enjoy our self-completion activity trails that take young visitors on a journey of discovery through the Discovery Centre, focused on critters, wheels, wings, squiggles, flowers and things that fly in the sky. Older children can complete our code-cracking Cipher Wheel Trail or Mathletes trail, while our youngest visitors can try our ‘Toddler Trail’. Suitable for various age levels. Free with general admission.

 

Food and Drink
Cafe2U Castle Hill East are proud to support our holiday program with their mobile coffee and food service. Cafe2U will offer a range of hot and cold drinks, sandwiches, meat pies, sausage rolls and sweet snacks daily from 12.30pm—1.30pm.

Please note that there are no permanent food facilities available on the Discovery Centre site. One drink vending machine dispensing cold drinks (including water) is located in the foyer of the Discovery Centre. Cafes and food and beverage outlets are located within a short walking distance of the Discovery Centre.
