Join us for a range of fabulous shows, including the engaging Nella’s Wings with the Sydney Puppet Theatre, some winter magic with the ever popular Jonas Jost and the amazing Flight and the Weather show presented by our friends from Fizzics Education. Young discoverers will also enjoy our inspiring make-and-do activities, including the Paper Bird Puppet and the Mini Constellation Viewer and can book a place in one of our exciting mini workshops including Stars and Planets, The Ultimate Magic Course and Flying with Shadows. For those interested in being an artist, jewellery designer, movie director or Lego master, we have a range of full day workshops including Mosaic Dragonfly, Jewellery Design and Make with Carl Noonan, Digital Claymation and our Lego® Build and Lego® Robotics workshops are back by popular demand!

Are you ready to be swept off your feet with an engaging and educational show that will give you an insight into flight and weather like never before? Our friends from Fizzics Education are ready to teach you about air pressure, tornados and how clouds are formed! Our young science aficionados will also learn about pressure differences related to flight, the design of aeroplane wings, the basic forces that act on flying objects and much more! The Mystical World of Jonas Jost

These school holidays we welcome back the charismagic Jonas Jost with his bag of tricks! Featuring both new illusions and old favourites, Jonas will have visitors mesmerised, enchanted and rolling with laughter with this enthralling magic show. Jonas has performed magic in countries all around the world and has won numerous awards, including a nomination for the prestigious ‘MO’ Club Entertainment Award. Suitable for all ages. Nella has always wanted more than anything to be able to fly, constantly dreaming about and imagining different wings and flying contraptions. Exploring this dream, Nella will take you on a captivating journey into her imagination as she visits creatures and wonderful places that may help her find a way to fly. Using table top puppets and the beautiful artistry of shadow theatre, Sue Wallace from the Sydney Puppet Theatre will bring to life an engaging and interactive story in her performance that will leave audiences mesmerised.  Suitable for all ages. Paper Bird Puppet

Inspired by our friend Kay Yasugi and her puppet friends from Pupperoos during their visit to the Powerhouse Discovery Centre during the autumn school holidays, this wonderful craft activity enables young discoverers to make their very own Paper Bird Puppet to take home. Made out of simple craft materials and paper plates, young discoverers will learn how to construct their very own Paper Bird Puppet to fly way up high! Suitable for 3+ yrs. Mini Constellation Viewer

Have you ever looked up into the night sky to see the beautiful groups of stars and the patterns they form? In astronomy, this is called a constellation and with your very own mini constellation viewer you will be able to recognize some of the most common around. In this craft activity, young discoverers are invited to make their very own mini constellation viewer out of templates and a cardboard tube to look through and take home! Suitable for 3+ yrs. Become a science aficionado for a day and investigate the universe and space with our friends from Fizzics Education in this engaging and hands-on workshop! Educational and filled with fun, this workshop will teach participants about the Big Bang, Earth’s atmosphere, the solar system and much more. Participants will also get to make their very own astrolabe—an instrument used for measurement in astronomy—to take home!  Suitable for 7–12 years. Children aged 56 years may attend but must be accompanied and assisted by an adult guardian for the 90 minute duration of the workshop. $20 / $18 Powerhouse Members. Presented by renowned and talented magician, Jonas Jost, this workshop will have participants learning and practicing dexterity, showmanship, magic skills and tricks that will be sure to impress all your family and friends! Flying with Shadows   BOOK NOW

Inspired by our holiday show, Nella’s Wings, participants in this workshop will try their hand at the beautiful artistry of shadow puppet theatre. Presented by experienced and talented puppeteer, Sue Wallace from the Sydney Puppet Theatre, participants will design and create their own unique shadow puppet and then working with light and a screen, they will learn to bring their puppets to life by creating beautiful stories for everyone to enjoy. Suitable for 7+ years. Children aged 56 years may attend but must be accompanied and assisted by an adult guardian for the 2 hour duration of the workshop. $20/$18 Powerhouse members. Lego® Build: Construction Workshop

Become a Lego® master builder! Presented in partnership with the Technology Education Company, this full-day, hands-on, fun workshop will stimulate creativity while developing teamwork and problem solving skills. Introducing concepts of 3-D visualization, participants will work in small teams to build houses, castles and towers of strength using Lego®. Lego® Robotics Workshop

Presented in partnership with the Technology Education Company, this full-day, hands-on workshop teaches participants the basic skills of robotics using Lego® RCX bricks and software (Lego® 1999). During the workshop and working in teams of three, participants will build robots with Lego® and then program them to move, dance and conquer obstacle courses using touch and light sensors. Later in the day, teams participate in a challenge to determine the best-designed robot on the day. Please note that this workshop does not include a robot to take home at the end of the workshop. Jewellery Design and Make Workshop

Become a jewellery designer and maker for a day with jewellery designer and art teacher, Carl Noonan! During this workshop, participants will create two striking pieces to take home—a copper pendant and a silver ring. Drawing inspiration from our museum collection and objects in the sky, including birds, stars and more, participants will develop a design that reflects what they have observed. Learning jewellery techniques and utilising special jeweller’s tools, they will create a professional and unique pendant that they will cherish. Using the skills that they learn from making their pendant, participants will also learn how to make their own silver ring, including measuring lengths of metal for the diameter of their rings, using jeweller’s pliers and a mandrel to shape their ring and professionally polishing their finished product. Carl Noonan is back by popular demand, bringing his teaching experience and expertise to the Powerhouse Discovery Centre for an educational and hands-on experience that participants will never forget. Suitable for 10+ years. Children aged 89 years may attend but must be accompanied and assisted by an adult guardian for the 6-hour duration of the workshop. $80/$75 Powerhouse members. Digital Claymation Workshop

Do you want to be Australia’s next young director? Presented in partnership with Digi Ed, participants will work in groups of up to three as they write a narrative set in space! This may include stories about aliens, astronauts, the solar system, a long lost galaxy beyond your wildest dreams…the possibilities are endless! Once the storyline has been written, participants will learn to create clay characters, design backdrops, shoot and edit footage, add titles, music and sound effects to their movie so that once complete, they can receive a copy of their digital animated short movie on DVD to take home and share with their friends and family! Mosaic Dragonfly

Presented in partnership with Hughes Studio and Mosaico, this full-day, hands-on workshop teaches participants to create their own mosaic dragonfly. Participants will develop a dragonfly design on a 50cm dragonfly shape and then learn to cut and lay glass mosaic tiles to complete their mosaic artwork. Due to the drying time of the adhesive, participants will be required to grout their mosaics at home and will be prepared for this with a grouting demonstration in the workshop and provided with a grouting kit and clear instructions. Suitable for 8+ years. Children aged 6-7 years may attend but must be accompanied and assisted by an adult guardian for the 5-hour duration of the workshop.  $65/$60 Powerhouse Members. Fast Tracking the Future Colouring in Competition

Discovery Trails

Enjoy our self-completion activity trails that take young visitors on a journey of discovery through the Discovery Centre, focused on critters, wheels, wings, squiggles, flowers and things that fly in the sky. Older children can complete our code-cracking Cipher Wheel Trail or Mathletes trail, while our youngest visitors can try our ‘Toddler Trail’. Suitable for various age levels. Free with general admission.

Food and Drink
Cafe2U Castle Hill East are proud to support our holiday program with their mobile coffee and food service. Cafe2U will offer a range of hot and cold drinks, sandwiches, meat pies, sausage rolls and sweet snacks daily from 1.00pm—1.30pm.

Please note that there are no permanent food facilities available on the Discovery Centre site. One drink vending machine dispensing cold drinks (including water) is located in the foyer of the Discovery Centre. Cafes and food and beverage outlets are located within a short walking distance of the Discovery Centre.
